Club Activities/donations

The International Association of Lions Clubs is a service organisation and our motto is We Serve. The types of service undertaken vary enormously from club to club and, as well as practical 'hands on' service, include raising money which is then distributed among deserving causes, mainly in the local community. Some service projects involve more than just one or two local clubs. Listed below is a selection from the service activities and donations made during the past year by our club.

 

  1. £200 donated towards travel costs for local child’s treatment in London for a brain tumour.
  2. 50 senior citizens attended our Christmas lunch at a cost to the Club £600.
  3. £250 donation to Oak Cottage Nursery in Woodingdean.
  4. Manned Father Christmas Grotto at local Garden Centre for 6 weekends prior to Christmas, which required 150 hours of Lion’s time.
  5. £250 donation to Lions Sight Savers to sponsor Eye Camps in the Third world.
  6. £200 donation to Special Olympics and £200 donation to Junior Disabled Sports.
  7. £100 donation to Jubilee Sailing Trust
  8. £100 donation to Water Aid in Africa.
  9. £880 to provide an African Drumming and Dance workshop for Children at Downs View Special Needs School.
  10. £200 donation towards tents for local Girl Guides summer camp
  11. £400 donation towards 2 local scouts attending Uganda Kamuli.
  12. £500 donated to Activenture the chosen charity of our candidate for the Lions Young Ambassador of the year competition.
  13. £100 donated towards summer outing for children of the local unemployed.
  14. 600 used spectacles dispatched to Chichester for recycling to third world.
  15. Lions helped at the Zone It’s a Knockout for people with learning difficulties.
  16. Musical instrument purchased for special needs children at Downs View School at cost of £225.
  17. £300 contribution towards residential holiday for 2 special needs children, whose parents could not afford for them to attend.
  18. £200 donation towards Rottingdean in Bloom.
  19. £200 donation to Libra the Lions Blood Research Unit at Kings College Hospital in London.
  20. St Georges Day celebration in Rottingdean included tea and bingo for senior citizens and a painting competition and disco for the children.  Cost to the club £355.
  21. £100 to Medic Alert hardship fund for people who cannot afford emergency medical information bracelets.
  22. £146 for purchase of Lions / UNICEF Educational kit.
  23. Champagne and flowers delivered to a local lady on her 100th birthday.
  24. BBQ provided for Zone Activity day for special needs children at Blacklands Farm.
  25. Two donations of £500 to Martlets Hospice in memory of two Lions who died during the year.
  26. £200 donated to LCIF Indonesian Earthquake Relief fund.
  27. £200 donated to LCI Youth Camp (August 2007).
  28. Total of £390 donated to Robin Baker Orphanage.
  29. £100 donated to Lions Belarus Trust.
  30. Our Saltdean Gala Day as usual included races and games for the children.
  31. Once again we hosted a party of 30 disabled children from Activenture together with their 1:1 same age carers and adult group leaders, for a day out in Brighton.  This year included rides on the pier and a boat trip in the Marina before an evening BBQ, games and a disco in the Rottingdean Scout field.  The total cost to the club was in the order of £1,100.
  32. BBQ and Bar run for the Rottingdean Village Fair. 50% of profit (£692) donated to the Village fair charities.
  33. £325 donated to Whoopsadaisy charity for physically disabled children.
  34. £250 spent on shoebox items in lieu of a shortage of donated shoeboxes for Gomel, Belarus.
  35. £100 contributed towards power supply for Rottingdean Village Green to help all organisations who use the Green for community events.
  36. £100 sponsorship for a Lion taking part in a walk for prostate cancer research.
  37. Senior citizens music concert arranged in conjunction with local school.
  38. Senior citizens coach outing to a Christmas Fair at a cost of £290.
  39. £165 to sponsor Punch and Judy show for Rottingdean Smugglers Night.
  40. £100 donation to Lions Street Children appeal.
  41. £100 donated towards Christmas party for local children of the unemployed.
  42. Digital camera and rugby head guards provided for Ovingdean Hall School for the Deaf at a cost of £391.
  43. Wreath laid on behalf of the Club at the Rottingdean Remembrance Day parade.
  44. £1000 donated to the Brighton and Hove Mayor’s charities (Martlets Hospice and Whoopsadaisy) raised at a joint event with Brighton and NPS Lions and Seahaven Lionesses
  45. £2000 donated to Community  First Responder Scheme run by the South East Coast Ambulance Service in April 2007
